The popularity of wearing birthstones--especially set in a ring--dates back to the 15th Century. Traditionally, everyone would wear a
different birthstone each month, since the powers of the gemstone were
heightened during its month. In modern times, however, we think of the
birthstone as a symbolism of the month we were born. When looking at birthstone
lists, you may notice that some conflict, claiming different gemstones for some
