How the ring completes its journey from the velvet box to the groom’s pocket and onto the bride's finger -- and the vows traditionally recited as the groom does so -- is no small matter. In British tradition, the best man traditionally keeps track of the wedding rings and hands them to the bride and groom at the appropriate time. In elaborate weddings, a ring bearer -- usually a young boy -- takes on the very adult responsibility of walking up the aisle with the ring sitting on a satin pillow. Another option is to have the maid or matron of honor keep the rings during the ceremony and give them to the bride and groom just before they say their vows. In a traditional Christian ceremony, the marriage vows are recited as the couple exchanges rings. While the sentiment is the same across Christian religions, exact phrases vary. Most are familiar with the phrase “ … until death do us part,” but others may vary according to religion. Here are some of the Christian wedding vows you may hear as rings are exchanged: “ ... take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (from traditional Catholic vows) "... to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death." (from traditional Anglican vows) "With this ring I thee wed, and all my worldly goods I thee endow. In sickness and in health, in poverty or in wealth, 'til death do us part." (from traditional Baptist vows during exchange of rings) "I give you this ring as a sign of my love and faithfulness. Receive this ring as a token of wedded love and faith."
